Summer, training camp heat up

By | Posted Tuesday, July 31

Key Viking offensive position races are as hot as a Mankato summer, and among them are the running back and wide receiver spot. The preseason opener against St. Louis is only ten days away and Vikings head coach Brad Childress is getting a good look at some of his unproven prospects before the exhibitions begin. With Chester Taylor hurting with a bruised arm and Adrian Peterson just arriving at camp after a three-day holdout, Mewelde Moore and Artose Pinner have been getting a lot of action at the running back spot. Childress has said that Moore is having a "quiet" training camp but he has been getting "incrementally" better at things like blocking. Childress also said Pinner is doing well in blocking situations.

At the wide receiver position, the Vikings have some flashy young talent with Aundrae Allison and others, but Childress has commented that he hasn't seen the consistency he would like from his receiving corps. Childress isn't looking for the next Randy Moss, but would rather like possession receiver who can run his trademark five yard crossing patterns with precision. Former Bears receiver Bobby Wade is a good candidate to fit into Childress' scheme, as well as a source of mentorship to the younger receivers.
